Awesome Apps

The latest major update to the popular and snarky Carrot Weather app brings a delightful array of new features and improvements. It adds a dynamic “garden that grows over time” as part of a redesigned interface, along with line charts for hourly and daily forecasts, integrated weather news from around the world and more.

But of course it will still call you a “meatbag” and act surprised you’re still alive if you haven’t opened it lately. New Carrot Weather 6.0 is now available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.

Carrot Weather 6.0

Carrot Weather is a longtime favorite of mine because it gets a laugh while providing not-normally-funny comprehensive weather information. No wonder it’s won so many awards. And now it’s even better.

“Summer is on the way, meatbags!” the release notes say. “And while you’ve been busy preparing your pudgy bodies for swimsuit season, I’ve been hard at work on the big version 6.0 redesign of your favorite weather app.” (And by the way, you can set how snarky you want the app to be.)

Highlights of the new version

Here are the major highlights in Carrot Weather 6.0:

Garden layout: Carrot Weather’s fresh new design showcases a garden that grows and evolves over time, right in the main current-conditions window. Cute little robots named Droney, Rover and Stretch go around pruning trees, watering plants and delivering supplies. The garden’s growth resets at the start of each month, ensuring refreshed scenery. Premium users can keep their current layout if desired.

Data point picker and line charts: The Hourly Forecast section’s data point picker allows quick access to preferred weather data without leaving the main screen. As you select different data points, like precipitation chance and wind speed, the hourly line chart smoothly animates and changes color. It even updates the data points displayed in the Daily Forecast section for a comprehensive week-ahead view.

New layout options: Over a dozen new options surface in Settings > Layout, including new styles for many sections. Noteworthy additions include the long-awaited line chart for the Hourly/Daily Forecast sections (premium only) and a toggle on the Minutely Forecast section that lets you switch between a precipitation chart and a mini radar map for your area.

Weather news: Stay informed about major weather events worldwide with articles sourced from AccuWeather. It prioritizes stories relevant to your geographic region. Those related to active weather alerts will be featured on the Weather Alerts screen.

Yesterday’s temperature: Gain context on today’s weather by comparing it to yesterday’s temperature with the new popup notification. It comes up when you open Carrot Weather (premium only). You can also visit the Daily Details screen for more information on yesterday’s weather.

Furthermore, Carrot Weather 6.0 introduces five new secret locations, a fresh icon set and improved layouts for iPad and Mac.

Here’s how the release notes sign off, with a touch of climate-change gallows humor: “Now excuse me while I plot how I’m going to break last year’s temperature records.”

Carrot Weather is available as a free download from the App Store, with Premium, Ultra, and Family subscriptions offered as in-app purchases to unlock all features.
