Refresh your screens with these vibrant, cubist wallpapers

Designer Basic Apple Guy started the last month of 2024 by releasing yet another fresh and interesting set of wallpapers for your Apple devices. They’re the “vibrant and minimal cubist-inspired” Liminal Spaces series, released December 2. They might be the best new wallpapers I’ve seen this month.

And they’re certainly an interesting alternative to holiday themes. For me, the light, colors and shapes composed in the wallpapers brought to mind not only cubist art, but abstract expressionist Richard Diebenkorn’s landscape paintings.

If you want a fresh, modern, angular, colorful and Diebenkorn-ish look on your Mac, iPhone or iPad display, Basic Apple Guy’s new Liminal Spaces series might be a good choice.

“Liminal Spaces is a wallpaper set created while playing with different shapes, textures, patterns and perspectives,” he said. “Each wallpaper is a collage of varying design and pattern cutouts that give some semblance of space and perspective while remaining simultaneously ambiguous.”

He noted he aimed to make designs for his devices that “looked vibrant, uncluttered and fascinating.” Mission accomplished.

He also described his process, as he always does with new work:

Each wallpaper started inside Sketch, where a 12000 x 12000 canvas was broken into 15-20 pieces. Leading lines were added to give some sense of a focal point and perspective, though many shapes were randomly carved out. From there, a colour palette was selected. Finally, textures were collected from several sources, including photography from Unsplash (e.g., sand, clouds, concrete walls), while other textures were generated in MidJourney (fluted glass, gold foil, and distressed fabric are some examples).
