In a big win for Apple TV+, the French-American-Japanese series Drops of God captured the prestigious International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series at a ceremony Monday night in New York, according to reports late Monday and Tuesday.

The win strengthens Apple TV+’s growing reputation for delivering compelling international content and marks another successful adaptation of popular manga for the streaming platform.

Apple TV+’s Drops of God wins International Emmy for Best Drama Series

Drops of God, produced by Legendary Television, emerged victorious in a competitive field that included strong contenders from major streaming rivals, The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets reported. Other contenders included Amazon Prime Video’s Argentine espionage thriller Yosi, the Regretful Spy, Disney+/Hotstar’s adaptation of The Night Manager and the Australian period drama The Newsreader.

Drops of God follows the high-stakes world of wine expertise and concerns itself with family legacy. The series’ triumph at the International Emmys adds to Apple’s growing collection of accolades, following previous successes with shows like Ted Lasso and The Morning Show. And season two of Drops of God is on the way, although Apple has not yet mentioned a streaming date.

New season to follow highly rated first season

The first season, starring Fleur Geffrier (Das Boot, Elle) as Camille Léger and Tomohisa Yamashita (The Head, Tokyo Vice) as Issei Tomine, made world-class wine tasting surprisingly accessible. The season bagged a 100% Certified Fresh critics’ score on Rottentomatoes.com (viewer score: an excellent 93%). Cult of Mac‘s reviewer loved the show and even interviewed Geffrier about it.

The 2024 International Emmy Awards, hosted by previous Emmy winner Vir Das, celebrated excellence in television across 21 countries. While Drops of God secured the headline drama award, other streaming platforms also enjoyed success throughout the evening. Netflix claimed victories with Thai actress Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying winning Best Actress for Hunger and the Argentine series División Palermo taking home the comedy prize.

Honoring TV luminaries

In acting categories, British veteran Timothy Spall added an International Emmy to his BAFTA recognition for his powerful performance in the BBC’s The Sixth Commandment. The ceremony also honored industry luminaries, with French TV executive Sidonie Dumas of Gaumont receiving the Directorate Award and acclaimed producer David E. Kelley accepting the Founders Award.

For Apple TV+ subscribers, the victory of “Drops of God” represents another compelling addition to their watchlist, joining the service’s expanding library of award-winning international content. The success highlights Apple’s growing influence in the global television landscape.
