Apple’s 2024 iPhone 16 lineup supports 45W wired fast charging, according to a Chinese regulatory agency. This is a notable step up from the iPhone 15 series, which could only pull a peak power of just under 30W.

If this is borne out, it raises questions about why the company did not highlight the iPhone 16’s faster wired charging speeds during the “It’s Glowtime” event. Even the specs page only mentions support for 20W fast charging.

Charge your new iPhone faster over USB-C

Apple officially only states that iPhones can fast charge to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W USB-C adapter. But some recent iPhone models can pull up to 27-28W of power on an empty cell with a compatible charger. And during the September 9th “It’s Glowtime” event, Apple only mentioned that the iPhone 16 lineup supports faster 25W wireless charging with its updated MagSafe charger.

However, a certification from the China Quality Certification Center reportedly reveals that the new iPhones also support 45W wired charging. More specifically, they can pull 15v@3A to fill up their batteries.

Based on Apple’s track record, the phones will likely only draw this much power when their batteries are almost empty. The speed may drop noticeably once the battery crosses the 50% mark.

Despite this, the iPhone 16 should take considerably less time to go from 0 to 100% over wired charging.

Your might need a new USB-C charger

Apple claims the iPhone 16 takes 30 minutes to charge from 0 to 50% with a 20W USB-C adapter. With a compatible 45W charger, the time should be even less. Samsung’s flagship phones, including the Galaxy S24 Ultra, also support 45W wired fast charging.

The OnePlus 12 is still considerably ahead with 80W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging.

To enjoy the faster wired charging speeds on the iPhone 16, you’ll need a compatible 45W USB-C charger. Your existing USB-C charger might not work if it does not support 15v3A output.
