Is the new M4 iMac worth it? Should you upgrade and buy one? The latest models come with a big boost in performance and brighter, refreshing colors. It’s a solid upgrade if you’re still on an older model.
Of course, depending on your preferences, Apple may no longer make an iMac for you. You might want to consider the new Mac mini with a Studio Display.
Is it worthwhile to upgrade? We have a guide below with helpful charts and a video to help you decide.

It’s time to upgrade off of Intel
With the M4 generation, the time has come to move away from Intel, no matter which Mac you have. Even if you have the iMac Pro, or the last Intel iMac 5K from early 2020, the new iMac with M4 will treat you right. It’s up to 6× faster than the best-selling Intel-based model.
However, there’s a small asterisk in that the current iMac only comes in one 24-inch size. If you previously had a 27-inch iMac and still want the most screen space for productivity, you may be better served by the new Mac mini with a Studio Display. The Studio Display has the exact same display panel as the former iMac 5K — and the Mac mini can even be optioned out with better specs than are available on the iMac.
Upgrade from the M1 model if you want
If you have an M1 iMac, you’re already aboard the Apple silicon train. The jump to the M4 model will be noticeable if you use it for daily work, especially if you option out the new iMac with higher storage and memory options than were available before.
But only upgrade if you can afford to. Your M1 iMac will continue to serve you well, potentially for the next two chip generations.
If you have an M3, don’t bother
If you have the previous iMac with an M3 chip, don’t bother. The M4 offers some pretty impressive year-over-year improvements, but nothing too staggering to justify a whole new machine. The M3 generation of chips is well-suited for years of loyal computing.
