Football season starts Thursday, and basketball season is only a few weeks away. Get in the game now with NFL Retro Bowl ’25, and NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition launches in a few weeks.
Both are part of Apple Arcade, Apple’s gaming service.
Don’t just watch — play
Only a tiny percentage of people will ever become pro athletes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be a player. Sports simulations are a major category of gaming.
There are baseball games, and golf ones too, but with the NFL season kicking off Thursday, and the NBA season starting in October, there’s no better time to grab your iPhone and play a game based on these sports.

NFL Retro Bowl ’25 allows players to manage their favorite official NFL teams and players in a charming retro-styled simulation. The game features authentic rosters with players reimagined in a nostalgic pixelated art style, complete with realistic attributes and contracts.
It’s the first NFL-licensed game on Apple Arcade.

NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition, the latest addition to the long-running esports games franchise, gets into the action on October 3.
The update to the feature-packed basketball game brings The Neighborhood to mobile. This is a whole new area that combines indoor and outdoor streetball courts where players can challenge Game Center friends to one-on-one matchups or three-on-three contests. And look out for the league’s biggest stars.
The game also features new MyCAREER and The Association updates, new character customizations, and a revamped Greatest Mode allowing players to relive the career-defining moments of some of their favorites.
While NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition won’t be available via Apple Arcade for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV until early October, last year’s NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition is ready to play now.
Join Apple Arcade for 200+ games
Rather than paying individually for games, or enduring nagging to make in-app purchases in “free” games, Apple Arcade offers over 200 choices for a single $6.99-per-month fee.
Additional games used to debut on the service weekly, but a more recent strategy has each month’s new titles launch at the same time — at the beginning of the month.
Joining NFL Retro Bowl ’25 on September 5 are Monster Train+ and Puzzle Sculpt.
