In the never-ending arms race for more and bigger external displays in computer setups, one distinct subset is the ultra-wide, curved gaming monitor. Samsung is big in that game, and today’s M1 Mac mini user likes his 49-inch Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor, which he pairs with a couple of 32-inch 4K flat displays. And by the way, the big curved gaming monitor is deeply discounted right now on Amazon.

The user also asked for feedback on his new setup. You can see that below, too.

49-inch Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor is huge in M1 Mac mini setup, now $700 off

Redditor TheMrBr0wn showcased the robust setup in a post entitled, “Ok, here goes… what do you guys think?” Brown, just re-established in a new location as a day trader, runs a trusty M1 Mac mini as well as a PC on his butcher-block desk mounted on Ikea drawers.

“For the computer I have an M1 Mac Mini (8GB/256GB). Attached to that setup is a OG HomePod, and a Magic Trackpad. The keyboard is a Keychron K10 which I use with this and my WFH PC setup (attached to a dock via the USB-C cable on the left),” Brown wrote. “The Mac is used for light day trading in the mornings and very basic home pc use (spreadsheets, surfing, and etc.). I know cable management is terrible, it is on my list to fix.”

And as for the impressive phalanx of displays:  “The monitors are a 49-inch Samsung G9 and two 32-inch UJ59s. The 32-inch monitors or on stacking monitor stands from Amazon,” Brown said.

As it happens, right now Amazon lists the 49-inch Samsung Odyssey G9 ultra-wide curved OLED gaming display for $700 off, which puts it at 39% below the normal price. The Dual QHD resolution display packs a speedy 240Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time for smooth gaming. Featuring a slew of related technologies for great visuals, it achieves 1000-nit peak brightness and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

Brown asked, so here’s what commenters thought

Overall praise plus ergonomics criticisms

  • Honest opinion. Very nice! Comfy setup. The butcher block desk looks great. My desk is also from Ikea, it is actually the solid wood table that they use in their restaurants, the Norraker. Funny Bob Ross quote.
  • Not to sound rude, but was your goal to have the worst ergonomics possible? Bottom of the widescreen monitor maybe an inch above the desk, forcing you to look down to look at it. Other 2 monitors probably up to high with the edges in the middle so you’re always looking up and left/right to look at them. Take care of your posture and health, OP [original poster]. Brown replied: Thanks for the concern. I don’t spend long stretches at my desk, to prevent any serious issues.
  • Have to agree that your main monitor should be eye level, even if you’re not there much. Too low is better than too high, however. The others should be up or down. I’ve seen good setups with them angled down low. In the future maybe add some sit-stand legs to that desktop. Brown replied: Appreciate the feedback. You probably can’t tell but the top monitors are tilted down a bit, could add more angle for improved ergonomics.

Ergonomics defense, keyboard enthusiasm and more

  • Alternative take on ergonomics criticisms: I have 40-inch ultrawide in same position “inch above the desk”. My eye level is 1/3 of the height of the monitor below the upper edge If I sit up straight, if I leaned back on the chair, it’s lower. Normal desk and chair height, I’m a hobbit 168 cm tall. The monitor looks about a couple of degrees up. I’ve been working like this for a year and it’s the best for me. Before that, I worked on MacBooks 15-17-16 inches without a stand for 15 years and watched, as you wrote, down. I’m 36, I’m a product designer, I work a lot. I’ve never had any problems with my neck. So… Guys, please, stop criticizing the monitor that stands low, there are absolutely zero problems with it.
  • I see so many Keychron keyboards in this sub that I’m starting to wish one lol. Brown replied: The Keychron is a well built mechanical keyboard for the price. Definitely recommend!
  • I think you should move the shelves the desk is sitting on out to the sides to be flush with the sides of the table top. Brown replied: Appreciate the feedback! I may do that but I need to figure out a way to support the middle of the desk. I am afraid that with all the weight from the monitors it could over stress the butcher block.
