The acclaimed Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning spy drama series Slow Horses, starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman, gallops toward a green-lighted sixth season even as season 4 just concluded October 9, Apple TV+ said Tuesday. This continues a trend. Season 5 won approval right after the season 3 finale — well before season 4 aired. And it also makes Slow Horses the streamer’s longest-running show by number of seasons. Though admittedly, at six episodes apiece, they’re not long seasons.

“Audiences around the world have fallen in love with the Slow Horses, and I’m delighted that Gary Oldman will be leading this star-studded cast on another acerbic and action-packed adventure,” said Jay Hunt, creative director, Europe, Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ green lights Slow Horses season 6 just after season 4 finale

Like previous seasons of the darkly comedic Slow Horses, six-episode number 6 is adapted from Mick Herron’s CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning Slough House book series. Season 6 takes its story from Joe Country and Slough House, the series’ sixth and seventh novels (see synopses at the links). For his role as the once-great spy and now dissipated overseer of MI5 screwups — the irascible and rumpled Jackson Lamb — Oldman has received Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA Award nominations.

Amid a fusillade of admiring quotes from unnamed sources praising the show, Apple TV+ pointed out that all four seasons of it now streaming hold Certified Fresh scores on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. And two seasons hold 100% Fresh scores from critics.

So what happens in Slow Horses season 6?

With the season 5 trailer hiding in plain sight at the end of the season 4 finale episode, not much is known about season 6. But the streamer offered a tidbit:

“Season six sees the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge,” Apple TV+ said. (And for more of a synopsis, you can go to the links at the book titles above or here.)

And if you haven’t see the show, here’s a typical description:

Slow Horses is a darkly humorous espionage drama that follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House. Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but cantankerous leader of the spies who end up in Slough House due to their career-ending mistakes and who frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world.

Marvelous cast

In addition to Oldman, the show’s formidable cast includes Academy Award nominee Scott Thomas, Emmy Award nominee Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, BAFTA Award nominee Samuel West, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Joanna Scanlan and Academy Award nominee Jonathan Pryce.

See-Saw Films produces the series for Apple TV+. Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Julian Stevens, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Adam Randall, Gail Mutrux, Douglas Urbanski and Gary Oldman serve as executive producers. Season 6 is adapted for television by co-executive producer Gaby Chiappe. Adam Randall returns to direct.
