Tesla is rolling out a significant holiday software update, headlined by the launch of its first Tesla Apple Watch app. The new app, long expected and finally available next week, will allow owners of Tesla electric cars and trucks to use their Apple Watch as a digital key to lock and unlock their vehicles. That eliminates the need to carry a smartphone (at least for that reason).

Users can also view battery charge levels, control climate settings, and remotely open the front trunk (“frunk”) directly from their wrist.

Tesla Apple Watch app launches in first half of December

The Apple Watch app marks a first for Tesla, but it’s not the only feature in the holiday software update from Elon Musk’s EV company. It introduces several other notable features across Tesla’s vehicle lineup as well. (Last year’s holiday software update saw the addition of Apple Podcasts.)

Tesla owners will now gain access to Dashcam and Sentry Mode recordings through the Tesla smartphone app, with the ability to save and share clips for insurance or law enforcement purposes. The navigation system has been enhanced to allow drivers to set desired battery levels for arrival at their destination, with the route planner automatically adjusting charging stops accordingly. A new precipitation overlay on maps displays live weather data at destination points.

For safety, Tesla implemented a reverse cross-traffic alert system that provides audible warnings and visual indicators on the rearview camera feed when it detects vehicles or pedestrians. The update also includes automatic music volume reduction while in reverse, a feature common in other automotive brands.

‘Santa Mode’ for Cybertruck

Cybertruck owners receive exclusive features, including a holiday-themed “Santa Mode” that transforms the vehicle’s on-screen avatar into Santa’s sleigh complete with reindeer and elves. They can also customize their digital truck’s appearance with various wraps and license plates, with template instructions to be published on GitHub.

The update extends to Tesla’s entertainment features. Users can now schedule two new holiday-themed light shows remotely through the Tesla app. The company also enhanced its quirky “fart” feature with a new “Fart on Contact” function, like a whoopie cushion, that activates when someone sits in any seat.

For vehicles equipped with Tesla Hardware 4, the update includes FSD V13.2, enabling “parked to parked” autonomous capabilities. However, safety and legal compliance still require driver supervision.
