“The gorge is the door to Hell.” That’s all we learn about it from the trailer for the Apple TV+ thriller of the same name coming in February. Two agents tasked with protecting the world from whatever’s hidden in the depths are strictly forbidden to go in — but you know they’re going in.
The upcoming film stars Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sigourney Weaver.
The Gorge: ‘The world’s most dangerous secret’
Mystery thriller series have been a successful genre for Apple TV+. Silo and Severance are two prime examples. And now the streaming service is trying it with a film.
The trailer for The Gorge introduces two agents, each being given a unique assignment: spend a year watching over a creepy opening in the earth. They’re on opposite sides of the mist-shrouded canyon, and to preserve the gorge’s very existence they’re not allowed any outside contact, nor can the agents talk with each other across the vast chasm. Being young, good-looking and very bored, of course they break that rule. So when one of them accidentally plunges into the gorge, the other follows.
And that’s where the trailer ends: with the two disappearing into the mist. Obviously, the “hook” for The Gorge is the mystery of what’s inside, and the trailer does nothing to reveal what that is.
The trailer sets up the film well, but whether movie is a success depends on the monsters the young lovers confront living up to the hype.
The Apple TV+ teaser synopsis for the film says:
“Two highly-trained operatives (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.”

British-American actress Anya Taylor-Joy has quite a list of credits in a variety of genres. She was a chess champion in The Queen’s Gambit, and an action star in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. She’s also been in The Menu, and much more, and stars in Apple TV+’s upcoming adaptation of the crime thriller Lucky. Taylor-Joy won both a SAG and a Golden Globe award, and was nominated for an Emmy.
Miles Teller starred in Whiplash, the remake of Footloose and in the unfortunate 2015 version of The Fantastic Four
An Apple Original Film, The Gorge is directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Zach Dean. It’s being produced by Skydance Media.
Premieres on Valentine’s Day
The trailer shows the budding romance between the two agents, so perhaps it’s not too inappropriate that The Gorge premieres on Apple TV+ on February 14. Taking in a thriller with your sweetheart isn’t a typical Valentine’s Day date, but you do you.
Streaming the upcoming movie, plus many other films and series, comes with a subscription to Apple TV+. The service is $9.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.
And Apple’s streaming video service also includes much more, of course. There’s a library of sci-fi, drama, comedies, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.
