Apple TV+ committed on Friday to Dark Matter season two so fans of the popular sci-fi series won’t be left wondering what will happen with Ryan and Amanda.

The show now heads into uncharted territory — season one followed the events of a bestselling novel, but there’s no sequel for the book.

Dark Matter season 2 moves past the bestselling novel

Dark Matter started as one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade and in May became a solid hit for Apple TV+. It drew large audiences its entire run, according to analysts. Not surprisingly, many viewers wanted more. And Apple on Friday promised to give them their wish.

Blake Crouch, who wrote the novel and acted as showrunner for the series, indicated a Dark Matter season two make sense.

“In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities,” he said. “See you in the Box!”

Ryan and Amanda’s multiverse journey is only starting

Not surprisingly, no one got specific about what’s coming in future episodes. Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, talked only about “a new season that will captivate viewers with more twists and turns as we dive deeper into the mysteries of the multiverse.”

But Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly are definitely returning as the two leads in the series.

For those who haven’t read the book, Apple’s (spoiler-filled) description of its series says:

Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken. The series follows Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”

Friday’s commitment to Dark Matter season two made no mention of scheduling. Season one started in May 2024 and wrapped up in June, so fans can hope the sci-fi show will return in spring 2025.

Watch on Apple TV

In the mean time, the original nine episodes are ready to bingewatch. Of course, that requires a subscription to Apple TV+. The service costs $9.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial. You also can watch it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.

The streaming video service also includes much more, of course. Apple produces an array of generally highly rated movies and series.  That includes dramas, comedies, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.
