ShiftCam calls the Planck “the world’s smallest portable SSD,” and it’s certainly very small. That and the unusual placement of its USB-C connector allow the drive to fit neatly on the bottom of an iPhone Pro and hold up to 2 TB of high-resolution ProRes video as it’s being recorded.
The accessory hits the market soon and is being shown off at CES 2025 this week.
ShiftCam Planck: an SSD designed for iPhone
Any of the iPhone 15/16 Pro models can record high-resolution ProRes video, but only if the data is going directly to an external drive. Attaching a traditional SSD to the handset for this job can be cumbersome, hence the innovative design of the ShiftCam Planck, with the USB-C connector in the middle of one side, not the typical short edge.
“Our mission with Planck is to eliminate the barriers of traditional storage and empower creators to focus on their craft,” said Benson Chiu, CEO of ShiftCam. “We’ve designed a tool that’s so portable and powerful, it becomes an invisible yet essential part of any creator’s workflow.”
To enable recording 4K video at 120 FPS, the SSD offers data transfer speeds of up to 1050 MB/s.
While it’s designed to snuggle up to an iPhone 15/16 Pro or Pro Max, ShiftCam Planck can be used with virtually any computer with a USB-C port, including Macs and most iPad models.
ShiftCam promises the product is rugged: “It’s drop-proof, IP65 water-resistant and tough enough to travel wherever the creativity demands.”

On the market soon
ShiftCam Planck will launch on Kickstarter at the start of February for $125 for a 1TB variant and $199 for the 2TB. After this crowd-funding campaign, the SSD is scheduled to be widely available in the spring of 2025. The retail prices will come in at $189/1TB and $299/2TB.
SanDisk came up with a similar idea. Its Creator Phone SSD magnetically clings to the back of an iPhone when recording ProRes video. The product also premiered at CES 2025, going on all this week in Las Vegas.
